I'm not sure about Canon so I can't tell you anything about that. But the Nikon I have is extremely basic, and it is one of the lightest and cheapest out there. However, it's off the main market now and is replaced with the Nikon d3000. If you were looking for a Nikon, go for the Nikon d3100 (it has video capabilities too!)
